Accessibility Assessment Tool Parks and Open Gyms
Resource Description
The ACCESS Assessment Tool, created under the SABAI SAKRIYA – SANKALPA project, helps communities assess how inclusive outdoor gyms are for persons with disabilities. It enables park managers and community members to identify physical barriers and improve the safety, accessibility, and comfort of recreational spaces without requiring specialist expertise. The tool has been piloted at the Tarkeshwor Municipality Ward 4 Park and the Samakhusi (Kapurdhara) Park in Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward 26.
Evaluation Domains
The checklist evaluates outdoor gym inclusiveness across four domains: Access, which examines how easily people can reach and enter the site; Accessibility, which reviews features such as accessible restrooms, signage, and pathways; Use, which assesses whether equipment and facilities can be used by people with different abilities; and Usability, which focuses on comfort, safety, independence, and the overall user experience.
