Our Objective

"The project had two primary objectives: first, to identify and analyze existing local government processes and develop a framework for integrating accessibility considerations into standard procedures; and second, to implement accessibility recommendations at two pilot sites, creating accessible model parks that serve as replicable examples for future accessibility improvements across other municipal parks."

Project Overview

Sabai Sakriya Sankalpa is a continuation of the earlier Sabai Sakriya project, which assessed the accessibility of outdoor gyms and parks for people with disabilities. This phase focuses on implementing the recommendations identified in the initial assessment, including establishing improved accessibility processes and making physical modifications to enhance accessibility at two partner gym facilities.

The project was implemented over a one-year period beginning in March 2025. Key activities included conducting comprehensive physical accessibility audits of both project sites, shifting from observation-based and research-based assessments to compliance-driven accessibility audits. The project team presented audit findings to local government officials and collaborated to develop remediation plans for the parks.

A critical component of the project was policy integration, utilizing the government’s local-level planning and budget formulation guideline framework to ensure systematic incorporation of accessibility considerations into the remediation process. This approach aimed to build capacity among officials and community members to mainstream accessibility across future projects.

The project achieved several important outcomes, including enhanced accessibility awareness and knowledge among city officials, physical and systemic improvements to two outdoor gym facilities making them more accessible for people with disabilities, and the establishment of a replicable model for integrating accessibility standards into local planning and budgeting processes.
